Chapter Nineteen

We sat, side by side, by side, by side. Liv and I in the middle chairs and her mother beside her, my mom beside me. Liv and I were both wearing red shirts and jeans that were almost the same faded shade of blue. It looked like we’d texted this morning to coordinate our clothing. Red was both our favorite color. I knew that was just random chance. It wasn’t like there were that many colors of clothing we could have worn. Thank goodness the shirts were at least different styles.

I knew so much about Liv. We’d spent a lot of time not just playing our horns but playing a game where one of us would say something like “favorite movie” and we’d both scribble down the answer without the other seeing it. We’d found out we had a lot in common and a lot of things that were completely different. I’d also learned that while she had great taste in music — meaning the same as me — she liked the worst movies, and I didn’t even want to talk about the books she read because talking animals and time travel were at the very bottom of my list.

We’d also realized that just because we both liked the same thing — or didn’t like the same thing — it could have nothing to do with being related. After all, we’d found out a sushi dinner followed by ice cream was our favorite meal, but who doesn’t like ice cream and sushi?

My mom looked at her watch. She was getting impatient. We all were. News like this shouldn’t involve any more waiting. We were meeting the genetic counselor who would provide us with the results of our tests. According to the degrees on the wall, her name was Elizabeth Hunt and she had been trained at some pretty impressive places.

“I hate waiting,” Liv said.

The appointment was scheduled to start twenty minutes ago.

“On the bright side, it’s only been three weeks since they took the DNA,” Liv’s mother said.

“That’s a lot quicker than I thought,” I replied.

“Yeah, how did it happen this fast?” Liv asked.

“We paid for things to move quickly,” Liv’s mother answered.

“In addition, Liv’s mother made them an offer,” my mom said.

We waited for somebody to explain further.

“I was exploring their website and found some holes in their system that allowed me to directly access confidential information,” she said.

“You hacked their computers!” Liv exclaimed.

“I could have hacked their system. Instead, I told them about the weaknesses and helped them take action to make their system secure,” she said. “They were very grateful.”

“Grateful enough to expedite our results,” my mom added. “Thank you for doing all of that, Jenn.”

“I know the waiting has been hard for all four of us, but especially for Jaxson and Olivia.”

The door opened and a woman in a white lab coat appeared. Now we were finally going to learn the truth.

“I’m so sorry for keeping you waiting,” she said as she rushed in. She reached over her desk, introduced herself as Dr.
